All scheduled surgeries at Peradeniya Teaching Hospital have been suspended due to a shortage of drugs and consumable items.
Hospital Director Dr. H.M.Arjuna Thilakarathna told Daily Mirror that the suspension was carried out from yesterday (28) in order to save essential medical items needed for emergency and life saving surgeries.
"However, we have been informed by the Medical Supplies Division to supply relevant drugs and other items to resume surgeries as usual," he said.
"Accordingly, the shortage is being sorted out and all surgeries can be resumed by today itself," Dr Thilakarathna added.
In an internal letter issued by the Hospital Director, it has been articulated that it was decided to suspend all routine surgeries including surgeries of patients already admitted until further notice. <span style="font-weight: bolder; color: rgb(33, 37, 41); font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, " segoe="" ui",="" roboto,="" "helvetica="" neue",="" arial,="" "noto="" sans",="" sans-serif,="" "apple="" color="" emoji",="" "segoe="" ui="" symbol",="" emoji";="" font-size:="" 16px;"="">(Sheain Fernandopulle)
