-Utility and maintenance arrears amount to over Rs 159 Mn

-CEB withdraws from power supply maintenance

Several government hospitals including the Colombo National Hospital are on the brink of another crisis as the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has warned of possible power outages due to the failure to settle defaulted payments of electricity and maintenance bills, Daily Mirror reliably learns.

According to the informed sources, several government hospitals including the Colombo National Hospital, Mannar District General Hospital, Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, Colombo East Base Hospital Mulleriyawa, and the Infectious Disease Hospital have received ‘Red’ electricity bills for not clearing previous dues.

As such, the electricity arrears of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, Mannar and Mulleriyawa Hospitals are estimated as Rs 70 Million and Rs. 14 Million and Rs 2 Million.

Hospital sources told Daily Mirror that they had received a proportion of due amounts while the full amount is still to receive from the Health Ministry and Provincial Councils to settle defaulted payments

Meanwhile, the CEB has written to the Health Ministry Secretary via a letter dated at July 20 informing to take immediate steps to settle utility and maintenance arrears amounting to Rs 159 Million at six hospitals in the Colombo City.

Accordingly, the utility and maintenance arrears at National Hospital, De Soysa Maternity Hospital, National Dental Teaching Hospital, Lady Ridgeway Hospital, National Institute for Nephrology Dialysis & Transplantation, National Eye Hospital have been estimated as Rs 121 Mn, Rs 5.2 Mn, Rs 2.3 Mn, Rs 9.8 Mn, Rs 1.1 Mn, Rs 4.6 Mn and Rs 11.7 Mn.

The CEB has also informed the Health Ministry Secretary that they have already withdrawn from utility and maintenance services from aforementioned hospitals except National Hospital and warned that the CEB would not take any responsibility in the event of any power outage consequent to the failure to settle due amounts.

It is suggested that the finance ministry settled all utility bills of hospitals as a first priority of national interest and not to release any funds to subject ministry until we get rid of those roughs. They do not deserved to be maintained by valuable public funds any more.

    Dr. K.M. Samarasinghe Thursday, 27 July 2023 11:41 AM

Is the Health Minister is sleeping or gone to India to arrange his next commission bag.

    Dr. J.H.Mohamed Hanifa Thursday, 27 July 2023 11:43 AM

If Electricity Board disconnect the supply, more than 75% patients will die for sure. Hay Commission Minister Rambukwella do something before it is too late.

Dennis Luther - from Asgiriya Kandy Thursday, 27 July 2023 11:46 AM

First of all Kehliya Rambukwella has to pay about 3.8 lakhs for the mansions where he uses AC for his dogs. Has he paid that amount? or still pending? If not, first disconnect the power supply to him.

Do Doo Dooo Chin Thursday, 27 July 2023 11:48 AM

Now Rambukwella is playing games and trying to take revenge on Doctors and Hospital Staff. Finally, patients will get effected by this act.

Dr. Wilfred Aponso Thursday, 27 July 2023 01:07 PM

Minister Kehliya Rambukwella should intervene and solve this problem otherwise, the patients will die, and the minister will be responsible for it.

Worried Mother from Kurunegala (with tears) Thursday, 27 July 2023 01:09 PM

Very nasty and weak Health Minister we have. No Electricity, No Medicines, No Food ..... people are dying daily in the Hospitals.

CEB and SL government get your act together Thursday, 27 July 2023 01:43 PM

Are the General Hospitals and National Hospitals private hospitals charging fees from the patients? If so, who is responsible for paying these bills. All the government has to do is debit one account and credit another account. Does CEB want to cut the electricity supply and cause unwanted deaths?

    Jayantha Thursday, 27 July 2023 02:10 PM

Don't worry. We have loan money to import indian eggs while hospital matters are not essential matters according to this government. If this government has any brain at all they should setup solar panel systems at each hospital so that they do not have to depend on ceb jokers. Also use loan money for this kind of essential matters not egg importing.

    Neville Thursday, 27 July 2023 02:22 PM

Keheliya, had no experience in paying his electricity bills!

    Ram Thursday, 27 July 2023 03:08 PM

These claims are relating to the institutions that serve the public. It is agreed that the bills must be paid and Health Secretary and Minister are answerable. What bothers me is how recently the cabinet decided that over 50 Billion debt due from businessmen to Peoples Bank

    Roger Thursday, 27 July 2023 03:35 PM

No point talking bullshit. In any ordinary country they'll disconnect the power.

Tissa Fernando Thursday, 27 July 2023 04:12 PM

First , recover the outstanding bills from politicians and their families and business establishments and big companies.

Indika Silva Friday, 28 July 2023 09:35 AM
