As Omicron is becoming the dominant variant in Sri Lanka surpassing Delta, the health authorities raised the importance of curtailing public movement to avert a massive outbreak in the country.

COVID-19 Coordinator Dr. Anwar Hamdani said people should be prudent at this crucial juncture and make sure they restrict their movement.

“The sudden increase in number of COVID cases implies that Omicron is rapidly spreading in the country and the current situation could be a sign of a major outbreak in near future. Hence, it is imperative that people brace themselves,” he emphasized.

"The couple of things that people should do is to wear a mask properly and get the booster dose as soon as possible,” Dr Hamdani added.

He said only 31% had received the booster dose which need to improve further and added people show slight hesitancy in getting the booster does due to various myths and misconceptions.

"However, omicron-dominated wave would be inevitable if people failed to comply with health guidelines and take the booster," Dr Hamdani warned.

The omicron variant was discovered in South Africa just over a month ago, and experts caution that there is still plenty of time for the situation to change. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

As a first step they should shut down the new walkway in the Port City which is drawing thousands of people with many not adhering to Social distancing

Like UK and Japan its time to consider this virus as a seasonal flue and live with it no need to give hype and importance to it , even after vaccinating 80% - 90%, countries couldn't stop spreading and found its spreaded mostly by vaccinated due discreasing immunity after 3 months of each does including pfizer and modern so no point of lockdowns or vaccinations

Omicron very mild, no cause for concern luckily

The booster dose is a failure.. As many people have serious side effects such as paralysis, blood clotting and other serious life threatening issues..

It is not possible to stop plying buses and trains and public gathering etc. We have to live with it. I am sure, Sanakiyan and Sarath Weerasekara were fully vaccinated . Following the United Kingdom's precedence of removing all restrictions is wiser.

japan also considering the same , its time to treat this as a normal flue , but big pharman ,vaccines guys like bill gates ,who may not like it

Wrong advice! Increase movement so everyone catches this varient to kill off the more dangerous Indian version. Only way to get rid of Covid eventually. Health authorities need to be run by clever people, not bookworms!

    Jude Friday, 21 January 2022 10:42 AM

Everyone must get Booster shot!! I know from firsthand omicron spreading fast but it's mild, it's only cough and cold for few days!! Must not loose apitite !!

    Idiot Friday, 21 January 2022 10:44 AM

Good keep the port city open for few more days.

    mark Friday, 21 January 2022 11:18 AM

no point vaccinating you still will catch omricon.ill rather catch omricon than to vaccinate.less dangerous to get omricon than to vaccinate...

Worse than flu but for most people not life threatening if fully vaccinated. However for unvaccinated and vulnerable enough to require hospitalisation and 400 deaths a day in the UK. It's best if those without expertise and with scant knowledge don't mislead.

    Anna Friday, 21 January 2022 01:05 PM

Omicron is like a flu, countries with 3 doses see the highest number in cases and still they are taking off restrictions. We have to live with it!

    Paula Friday, 21 January 2022 01:05 PM

People, wake up! Vaccines are the worst virus. I am from Europe. Here, countries with 81% vaccination have the most cases. This is the flu and nothing else! Politicians have taken a lot of money from pharmaceutical companies and they do as they are told.

Paula: nonsense. And I am from Europe too.

    Mudalali Friday, 21 January 2022 02:51 PM

Vaccines are useless. They will only expedite your death. Stop making the politicians and big pharma rich. Just say no! Too many people have died of heart attacks and blood clots worldwide. This madness has to end!

Nadi Karunaratne Friday, 21 January 2022 03:18 PM

Paula. What you say is simply not true. Most hospitalizations and deaths are of the unvaccinated. You don't get to have your own facts.

    Antonita Friday, 21 January 2022 03:39 PM

Israel 4th shot -50,000 cases a day UK , 3rd shot, - Over 100,0000 cases a day! UK health minister has finally admitted that the COVID deaths reported are not due to COVID but due to other diseases but unfortunately Covid positive. If someone falls off a Cliff and dies with COVID, it’s not that COVID has killed the person! We need to stop scaremongering and let people live their lives. Antibiotic resistance has killed 6.3 million (1.7 million direct and 4.5 and indirect deaths) people in 2019, much more than all the COVID deaths in the last 2 years! It’s a silent pandemic that’s killing more people especially children. 1in5 deaths are in children. Where as COVID hardly attacks children and the deaths are not as exaggerated by the authorities. Just treat it as a flu and end this drama. Let people get back to normalcy.

    Paula Friday, 21 January 2022 03:58 PM

My husband is a cardiologist. 90% of heart deaths are vaccinated people. I'm sorry. Doctors know the truth but cannot talk about it. It is the vaccinated people who spread the virus. In addition, the composition of the vaccine is very controversial. Graphene Oxide and Spike Protein. Don't take it!
