In the wake of a knife attack carried out at a supermarket in Auckland, New Zealand, by a man of Sri Lankan origin, the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry today said that more information has been sought from the New Zealand authorities over the incident.
“We are awaiting more information about the incident as the New Zealand authorities are yet to communicate details about the incident,” Foreign Ministry Secretary Admiral (Rtd) Jayanath Colombage told the Daily Mirror. He said that Sri Lankan authorities were ready to provide the required assistance for the investigations by the New Zealand investigators into the incident.
He also said that the Sri Lankan authorities only knew the basic information about the incident as well as the suspect.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry in a statement condemned the attack and said “Sri Lanka condemns this senseless violence, and stands ready to cooperate with the New Zealand authorities in whatever manner necessary.”
“It is with shock and sadness that the Government of Sri Lanka has become aware of the terrorist attack by an individual in a supermarket in Auckland, New Zealand today, injuring several persons,” it said.
“Reports have been received that the particular attack had been carried out by a person of Sri Lankan origin. More information has been sought from the New Zealand authorities. While commending the quick response of the New Zealand authorities in dealing with this attacker, Sri Lanka wishes a speedy recovery to those injured during the horrific incident,” the statement added.(Sunil Jayasiri)

NZ government had information on his extremist views since 2016. He was being under surveillance for last 53 days by intelligence staff of 30. I am surprised why he was not deported back to Sri Lanka who was on a student visa.

It all starts with people getting brainwashed with extremist ideologies. Should trace the sources of such ideologies and nip them in the bud.
