The Tissamaharama Magistrate Tharindu Sameera Silva today ordered the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) to conduct a prompt investigation into the incident where a group had harassed and abused animals at Yala National Park recently and also ordered the suspects to be arrested and produced before court.

The DWC was further instructed to monitor CCTV footage of the incident where the number plates of the vehicles are seen, and to obtain a report from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

A group of 80 persons were reported to have arrived at the Yala National Park in 35 vehicles last Thursday (20) around 2 pm. It was reported that 7 Guides and Park Rangers assisted the group in their unruly activities. The group was seen speeding inside the park and behaving in a manner which harassed animals, the court was informed.

Footage of the incident went viral on social media, with the public crying foul over the management of the Park. The DWC informed court that the guides employed by the park had sought to relieve their duties by 5 pm that evening, according to Park officials.

The Magistrate ordered the suspects to be arrested immediately. The case will be heard next on November 9, 2022. (Nilanthi Ranasinghe and Amila Sampath Sri)

The officials, whether it be the police or relevant departments assisting criminals and getting bribe from them are the source of all banes in the country. We are hoping the just and stern judges in the judiciary take action against these corrupt officials and their bribing thugs. I was very pleased and relieved to have a sitting judge, who dealt with sand mining criminals with an iron fist in Jaffna district. Police and government turned a blind eye to our repeated pleas to stop it.

People of Sri Lanka hope the Government would take tough action on wild behavior of those who were on the yala national park. No matter who were there and who has what contact with politicians, they have to obey the law of the country, no one is above the law.

80 persons in 35 vehicles? Wonder what these two-legged animals were trying to achieve besides traumatising the real four-legged habitants of the sanctuary. Please expose all the names. Past experiences show that these two-legged animals are off-springs of our two-legged vultures roaming the country in the guise of politicians.

At least we have some judges out there with backbones and sense of justice… Hope the prodigal sons of corrupt ministers and their henchmen will be arrested and prosecuted. Law of the land should be applied not only the poor but also the powerful , the rich and the corrupt as well.

This is exactly how the law should work. Certainly hope this isn't an eyewash. Our judiciary has ruined their reputation over and over and now the judges have lost credibility and respect, therefore public requests impartial justice consistently, without any unlawful interferences. In other words, those who break the laws and ordinance lock them up !!

Regarding the incident in yala , where spoilt kids of wealthy people used a national treasure as their playground The public should have access to the number plates of all the vehicles , and these number plates should be available at all park entry points Black list all the identity cards too The number plates , identities of all those involved should be made public to prevent this recurring , otherwise as usual things go under the carpet in a few months

Arjay Colombo Wednesday, 26 October 2022 08:50 AM
