Some 81 institutions offering NVQ certificate courses have been suspended so far due to their low standards, the Sub Committees on Tertiary Education of COPE has revealed.
The Sub Committee recommended formulating a proper mechanism to publish the names of such institutions through newspaper notices and to take legal action to ban them.
The Sub Committees met in Parliament recently chaired by the Chairman of the sub-committee, MP Madhura Withanage and representatives of many institutions such as the Ministry of Education, Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission, National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority, Vocational Training Authority and the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute attended.
The Committee also stressed the need to identify the fake NVQ certificates and take legal action against the culprits.
The Committee said even though fake certificates could be identified through the QR code of the certificate, there were shortcomings in the Act to take legal action and therefore, gave instructions to amend the relevant Act so as to rectify the shortcomings.(Ajith Siriwardana)

Our lawmakers make acts favorable for looting or make acts delibaertalry delay the legal course. They won't bring any acts to stop or penalize those 81 institutes

Funny, that all acts of Parliament of the past 20 or so years have inherent LOOPHOLES that prevents legal action or REMEDIATION!!!??? This certainly reflects on the Character of Legislature! Is it because the ERUDITION of Parliamentarians is SUSPECT??? Although the SPRINKLING of Dr, PROFESSOR, D LITT (Honoris Causa) hasn't been sufficient to correct the situation!!!??? It abounds unabated!!!??? Should the constitution be amended to stipulate MINIMUM educational qualifications to be MP!!??

The government should take steps to strengthen the technical colleges in the island. Presently the resources are idling and not used for the benefit of students. No proper advertising and encouragement to school leavers and attract them to such institutions. Through these colleges we can provide the youth with ideal training for variety of jobs in the international arena.

There are educational institutions in SL who are awarding degrees that the standard is not even worth the paper it is written. That is why so many firms when advertisings for new recruitments they mention that "Your Degree Must be accepted by UGC". (University Grant Commission). That means must stop "University KADA"
