In an effort to streamline the fuel dispensing process at all Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) refueling stations, the CPC has decided to introduce a daily automated price revision system starting next year.

The discussion took place between the CPC Dealers Association and CPC officials at the Ministry.

The focus of the meeting was to improve the stock-taking process within the corporation.

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said new equipment will be introduced to enhance and streamline the stock-taking procedures.

These improvements are aimed at providing more accurate and efficient inventory management, benefiting both the CPC and its customers.

A wide range of topics were discussed at the meeting, including issues related to dealer margins, distribution of fuel, future developments and plans for establishing new fuel stations. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

A step in the right direction. In Germany, fuel prices at gas stations sometimes change every hour, which depends on the European spot price, as well as the time of day, the location of the gas station and the volume of traffic. It is not possible for the state to be involved in pricing. The competition regulates the market, with price rigging between companies being punished with fines worth millions of euro.

No…no this is a short sighted idea, motorists will have nothing else to do than running from one petrol shed to another looking for cheaper petrol as we have three players now

The existing sytem which cannot be implemented satisfactorily how will a daily system be free of any corruption. Now in the present system the public are aware of the prices of the fuel pumped into their vehicles. All these petrol sheds which are run by unscruplous businessmen should be dealt severely as these people are waiting for opportunities to make a quick buck since they know before hand whether the prices will move up/down and likewise they manipulate in refuelling the stocks. The problem lies mainly with the politicians and their lackeys who leak this vital information which results in the consumer facing a problem of the supply of fuel.

Until you have anti-trust laws implemented against price fixing, price gauging and collusion, and these type of laws strictly enforced against duopolies, monopolies or conglomerates, there's not going to be any redress to the consumer.

This way can make big bucks by some petrol sheds who gets inside information earlier about price changes. Ex- load 50000liters in stock at night with old price and following day price hike , say by 10 rupees. 500000/- within a day. similarly when the stock is less than 2000 liters, reduce the price by 1/-. So one can imagine the formula....

Anyone who visits advanced countries know that daily price setting is something that in fact does happen everywhere else. It's no big deal. A lot can happen on the international spot market on a daily basis, and monthly price revisions do not capture and reflect those changes.
