CSAS: Transforming Education Through Focused Attention and Community Service

Nestled in the heart of Colombo, the Colombo School of Arts and Sciences (CSAS) offers an educational experience that transcends traditional learning. As a Cambridge International School, CSAS has carved a niche for itself by prioritizing a personalised, close-knit environment, evident in its 1:12 teacher-to-student ratio and a total student population capped at just 60. This intentional design allows every student to receive individual attention, ensuring that their academic journey is both meaningful and enriching. 

Since its establishment in 2015, CSAS has consistently demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence, one of its three guiding principles, alongside; ethics and values, and character development. The school’s academic achievements, punctuated by a string of Cambridge Awards, including recognition in 2024, reflect the dedication of its faculty and students. Its alumni, now pursuing higher education at top universities worldwide, serve as living proof of the robust foundation CSAS provides. What sets CSAS apart is its focus on cultivating not just intellect but character. Ethics and values, pillars of the school’s philosophy, are woven into its community service initiatives. Central to this effort is SPERO, an annual project that encourages students to actively engage with underprivileged communities while amassing invaluable life skills. 

Each senior student dedicates over 1,000 hours annually to community service, making a tangible impact across Sri Lanka. Among SPERO’s standout achievements are: 

• Donating electric wheelchairs to the Hendala Leprosy Hospital through funds raised at a benefit concert. 
• Conducting teaching and hospitality training programmes for rural schools in Trincomalee and Kallara, Maavil Aru. 
• Organising a street food festival to fund therapy for differently-abled children at the Sunera Foundation. 
• Repairing incubators in the paediatric unit of the Badulla District General Hospital. 

Through these initiatives, CSAS fosters empathy, leadership, and teamwork, equipping students with skills that extend far beyond academics. This year, the students of CSAS are turning their attention to the Rotary for Little Hearts Initiative, a project by Rotary International District 3220 Sri Lanka and Maldives. This initiative focuses on upgrading cardiac and critical care facilities at Lady Ridgeway Hospital, where congenital heart defects claim over 1,500 young lives annually. 

To support this cause, CSAS will stage a student-written drama production, “A Toast to Death,” on January 19, 2025, at the Namel Malini Punchi Theatre. Aiming to raise a minimum of half a million rupees, the play also celebrates CSAS’s 10th anniversary, marking a decade of educational innovation and community engagement. A Toast to Death offers a gripping murder mystery set against the backdrop of a gala celebrating the 10-year tenure of London’s Mayor, Charles Grant. A colourful array of characters, including a French singer, a travelling theatre troupe, and London’s elite, becomes embroiled in a string of murders, prompting an enigmatic Scotland Yard detective to unravel the mystery. 

Directed by CSAS drama coaches Janidu Wijebandara and Hiruni Herath, with creative guidance from Sanchitha Wickremesooriya, the play exemplifies the school’s holistic approach to education. Students have taken charge of every aspect, from securing sponsorships to managing logistics, showcasing the self-reliance and teamwork instilled at CSAS. 

CSAS’s mission extends far beyond academic success. By integrating real-world challenges into its curriculum, the school prepares students to become ethical, socially aware leaders. Initiatives like SPERO and theatrical productions provide them with opportunities to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while fostering a sense of social responsibility.  In its tenth year, CSAS continues to exemplify the transformative potential of focused, values-driven education. As it nurtures the leaders of tomorrow, the school remains steadfast in its vision: to inspire excellence, build character, and empower students to make meaningful contributions to their communities and beyond.
