Royal and Trinity share honours at golf

The 10th edition of the Bradby Golf between Old Trinitians and Old Royalists ended in a tie at the Victoria Golf Resort last weekend.

Trinity drew first blood in the opening match with Chandima de Singhe and Sampath Hemachandra securing a 2-up win over Royal’s Anel de Silva and Harsha Abeywickrema. They extended their momentum when the pair of Nisal Hettiarachchi and Surain Premathilake defeated Derrick Ponnambalam and Saliya Jayaweera 4/3.

Royal fought back strongly in the middle order as Samitha Perera and Andy Anderson outplayed Trinity’s Suren Waas and Fazly Azhar winning 5/4 while Dilan Dedigama and Priyanga Hapugalle dominated with a resounding 7/6 victory against Anil de Silva and Ajith Dissanayake. The comeback continued as Gihan Wickremasinghe and Dineth Palhena clinched a 2/1 win over Gihan Puncihewa and Clifford Fernando.

In the sixth game, Suren Madanayake and Chulaka Amarasinghe delivered another Royal point, defeating the much fancied former cricketer, Ashan Welegedera and Hemanga Karunasena before Trinity’s Satish Balasubramaniam and S Sriharan levelled the field with a 2-up win. Tension grew when James Elliyathamby and Prasad Dissanayake from Trinity edged Romesh Abeywickrema and Roschen Perera 1-up.

Royal’s Lucky De Simghe and Suhayb Sangani fought hard to snatch a 1-up win over Tharanga Gunasekera and rugby famer Shah Dole. But Trinity’s Asiri  Ariyaratne and Niranjan Kandiah sealed the tie with a 7/5 victory in the final match over Arjun Fernando and Dr Senarath Yapa.

Old Trinitians in a sporty act though the game was tied presented the trophy to Old Royalists. 

This encounter was played for GC Wickremasinghe Trophy and Old Trinity lead the series 6-3.

Meanwhile in the Victoria Bowl best five cards was won by Old Trinitians who beat old Royalist 150/125.

The 1991 Trinity rugby skipper and Lion, Ayas Deen was the highest scorer for Trinity with 37 points.
