Janaka Gallangoda Trophy basketball on Saturday

All arrangements have been finalised to conduct the inaugural Dr. Janaka Gallangoda Memorial Trophy invitation basketball tournament which will be worked off on August 30 from 8.00 am to 6.00pm at the Ruhunu University gymnasium in Wellamadama, Matara.

Dr. Janaka Gallangoda Memorial Trophy tourney is organised by his University colleagues as an act of gratitude to him and they hope to conduct it once in two years.

Four Southern school old boys’ teams, Ruhunu University and a Galle combined team will battle for the Trophy in the main tournament. The old boys’ teams are Rahula, Richmond, Dharmasoka and Mahinda.

In the main tournament, six teams will compete in two groups ‘A’ and ‘B’ in the first round with a reduced time format and the semis and the final will be played in the evening.

Additionally there will be two exhibition matches between Dharmasoka College under-20 girls’ team and Ruhunu University girls’ team along with the Ruhuna Legends over-50 match among two teams of Ruhunu

University alumni who have played basketball with the late Dr. Janaka Gallangoda.

Prof. Thilak Weeraratne, the Dean, Faculty of Medicine Ruhunu University will be the chief guest at the event. 

According to the organisers, the winners of the main tournament will receive a cash award of Rs.30,000 while the runner-up will be awarded Rs. 20,000 apart from the trophies. 

The Best Defensive Player and Best Offensive Player too will receive cash awards apart from the trophies.-MSA
