India bags Rs. 936 million jackpot

Sri Lanka pockets Rs. 119 million


India pocketed 3 million US dollars for winning the T20 Cricket World Cup by beating New Zealand in a one-sided final in Ahmedabad, India on Sunday night.

The amount is equivalent to Rs. 936 million in Sri Lanka money which is the highest a team has won in the history of the T20 World Cup which commenced in 2008.

The prize amount is initially awarded to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which subsequently distributes the funds among the players and support staff.

The distribution typically includes performance bonuses, match fees and other incentives for the members of the squad who contributed to the victorious campaign.

Although New Zealand fell short in the final, the team still received a significant financial reward for finishing as runners-up taking home a purse of 1.6 million US dollars, which amounts to Rs. 487 million in Sri Lanka money. For entering the semifinals England and South Africa received 790,000 US dollars which amounts to Rs. 246 million in Sri Lanka money.

After missing out on a place in the semifinals, Sri Lanka received Rs. 119 million.

Even teams that were eliminated during the group stage received payments. 

Likewise Canada, Italy, Namibia, Nepal, the Netherlands, Oman, Scotland, the UAE and the USA received 250,000 US dollars which amounts to Rs. 78 million each in Sri Lanka money.
