Gateway College has once again set a new benchmark in school sports infrastructure in Sri Lanka with the unveiling of state-of-the-art basketball courts built to Olympic-grade specifications in Colombo and Kandy, the school said in a media release.
It said cutting-edge development exemplifies the school’s unwavering commitment to nurturing excellence in sports while prioritizing the safety, comfort and performance of its athletes.
The newly laid courts feature a shock-absorbent, rubberized surface integrated with an advanced air-cushion system.
“This innovative flooring significantly minimizes the strain on players’ joints, effectively reducing the risk of injuries and fatigue. The result is a playing experience that allows students to train and compete with greater confidence and consistency while maintaining peak performance levels,” the statement said.
The statement also added that the flooring material has been sourced from a recognized Olympic supplier and carries FIBA (International Basketball Federation) certification - ensuring that the playing surface meet the same standards as those used in elite global tournaments making Gateway College the only school in Sri Lanka to boast facilities that mirror those of professional arenas worldwide.
Gateway has been inspired by the outstanding success of its basketball teams in recent years. The school currently holds the distinction of being Under-19 TISSL Champions in both the boys’ and girls’ categories, as well as All-Island Under-17 and Under-15 ‘A’ Division Champions.
Moreover, four Gateway players have earned the honour of representing the Sri Lanka Schools team - an achievement that underscores the depth of talent nurtured within the institution.
“In keeping with its vision of contributing to the nation’s sporting excellence, Gateway College also makes its world-class facilities available free of charge for use by national sporting teams. This initiative reflects the school’s broader commitment to advancing sports development in Sri Lanka and supporting athletes at every level”, the statement further added.
