49th National Sports Central Province Track and Field C’ships: Wijetunga, Kumari crowned Best Athletes

At the 49th National Sports Central Province Track and Field Championships, T.G.S. Wijetunga of Matale District was honoured as the Best Male Athlete, while Ajanta Kumari of Nuwara Eliya District was named Best Female Athlete.
The championships, organised under the guidance of the Central Province Ministry of Sports, took place at the Digana Sports Grounds in Kandy. Wijetunga earned his title by excelling in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.34 metres, while Kumari impressed in the women’s 800 metres with a time of 2:11.00 minutes, securing her recognition.
Meanwhile, Kandi District athletes accumulated 195 points to clinch the overall men’s and women’s track and field championships of the tournament. The overall runner-up title went to Matale District, which scored 140 points.
The awards ceremony was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Sports, Sugath Thilakaratne.
