Winds reduce rains and temperature: Meteorology Department

• There will be light showers in some areas including East and North Central province from February 12 to 16
• No heavy showers are expected until end March
• The usual thunder and rains are expected around April 14 this year

Increased winds have reduced rains bringing a dry spell to Sri Lanka, an official from the Department of Meteorology said yesterday.   

“Increased winds prevent forming of clouds in the skies above Sri Lanka and it also prevents forming of humidity. This prevents rains and thus create a dry spell,” Director General Department of Meteorology Athula Karunanayake told Daily Mirror.   

However, there will be light showers in some areas including East and North Central province from February 12 to 16. No heavy showers are expected until end March. The usual thunder and rains are expected around April 14 this year,” he said.   

Asked as to why the temperature has gone down in most of the areas in Sri Lanka, Mr. Karunanayake said it is because of the cold winds from the Tibetan range. These winds make mornings chilly these days,” he said.
