Two injured in mortar explosion

Two individuals were seriously injured in a mortar explosion last morning and were admitted to Kilinochchi Hospital.

They had found the old mortar behind an abandoned house and had struck it with a hammer in an attempt to break it. The two individuals were 55 and 25 years of age.

Investigations revealed that they were scrap iron mongers and that they had been collecting discarded material when they came by the mortar. Police said the two men had been critically injured in their limbs. According to sources at the Kilinochchi Hospital, they were to be transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital

Kilinochchi Police are conducting further investigations.
