Ten-year-old girl pregnant, stepfather arrested

Suspect’s mother and sister arrested for aiding and abetting

An individual who raped and impregnated his ten-year-old stepdaughter was taken into custody by Galnewa Police yesterday.

The 35-year-old suspect was her mother’s husband from her second marriage and a carpenter by profession. Police said the girl’s mother had gone abroad for employment, leaving the child in the care of the stepfather.

Investigations revealed that the girl had been raped by the suspect with her mother’s knowledge, even before she went abroad. She had been sexually abused earlier by the suspect’s brother-in-law, who is now on remand in connection with the incident. Police said the suspect’s mother and sister were arrested for aiding and abetting.

A police team led by OIC Crime Investigation Branch Sub Inspector Ilangaratne conducted investigations based on information received from the Child Protection Authority and on the instructions of OIC Galnewa Police Inspector of Police M. Rohan Munasinghe, and subsequently arrested the suspects.
