Suspect arrested over attempted abduction near girls’ school in Colombo

The Cinnamon Gardens Police have arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with an attempted abduction near a prominent girls’ school in Colombo, police said.  

The arrest follows an investigation launched after a woman filed a complaint on May 2, stating that an unidentified man had entered her vehicle after she arrived to pick up her daughter from school.  

According to the complaint, the man got into the backseat—where the 8-year-old child was already seated—and demanded that the woman drive the car. The child recoiled in fear, while the mother refused to comply and instead pulled her daughter away from the suspect, calling for help.  

The man then fled the scene.  

Police said the investigation was launched with the help of surveillance footage, which showed the suspect escaping in a taxi.   

Following a lengthy investigation, he was arrested in Kolonnawa yesterday.  

The suspect has been identified as a resident of Kolonnawa.
