A supermoon was lighting up the sky on Vap Poya Day, appearing approximately 7% larger than a typical full moon, the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) said.
The full moon is classified as a supermoon due to its increased size and brightness compared to other full moons observed on Poya days. Supermoons occur several times a year when the moon moves closer to the Earth along its elliptical orbit.
ACCIMT experts noted that this phenomenon can happen during both full moon and new moon phases. Residents along coastal areas were to experience slightly higher-than-usual tides. Additionally, sky watchers have a rare chance to observe Saturn positioned near the bright full moon.
The supermoon provides an excellent opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts and the public to witness a spectacular natural event while marking the sacred Vap Poya Day.
