Sungavila–Somawathiya road flooded, traffic disrupted in Polonnaruwa

Vehicular traffic along the Sungavila–Somawathiya Road in Polonnaruwa has been completely disrupted due to the overflow of the Mahaweli River at Manampitiya, police said.  

According to the Pulasthigama Police, authorities closed the road from this morning after floodwaters rose to about two feet, making it unsafe for travel. The closure affects access to the Somawathiya sacred area, with the Sungavila–Somawathiya route now fully impassable.  

Police said the inundation was caused by continuous rainfall in the Polonnaruwa district coupled with the overflowing of the Mahaweli River at Manampitiya. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes until water levels recede.
