Sudden spell of showers as North-East monsoon weakens

DMC to remain on high alert until A/L’s conclude

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) declared they will remain on high alert until the stop-start Advanced Level exams that are currently underway finish soon, DMC’s Pradeep Kodippili said. 
“Though the deep depression has moved away from the island, the weakening North-East monsoon will bring about 50-75mm of rain. Until the completion of the A/L exams, we 100% remain on high alert and also notify the potential areas under threat, including schools. That makes our monitoring 24/7”, explained. 
In the recent few days, despite the hype of the deep depression, there have not been heavy or 50mm of showers, he added. In the meantime, Director of the Weather Forecasting Division, Meryl Mendis said the sudden spell of showers is because of the fading North-East monsoon. 
“The sudden burst showers wetting Colombo and the western province is due to the side effects of the North-East monsoon. The fading North-East monsoon will cause sudden spells of thundershowers until Thursday (15). After that, the rain conditions will gradually decrease and sunny and summer conditions are expected to kick in”, he explained. He reasoned out until late this week; cold weather will also prevail. However, that too will improve from next week onwards.
