Smuggled cigarettes valued Rs.5.5 million seized

A consignment of foreign cigarettes smuggled into the country was seized and a woman who arrived from Dubai arrested on suspicion by the Police Narcotics Bureau officials in the early hours of last morning.   

Police said the market value of the stock of 36,000 contraband cigarettes could have been about Rs.5.52 million. They said the 34-year-old suspect woman was a resident of Ja Ela.   
Investigations revealed that she had been carrying on the racket since long and that she often visited foreign countries.   

She was released on police bail pending legal action against her before the Negombo magistrate on October 02.
