Schoolgirl gang-raped, six suspects arrested

The suspects taken into custody in connection with the  alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl were produced last morning  before Homagama Acting Magistrate Pathmasiri Jayawardene and six of  them were referred to Makola Children’s Home and placed under probation  and the other aged 19 years was remanded till April 11. The seven  suspects included the victim’s lover.   

Police told court that on the medical examination report,  three of the suspects would be charged for the rape and the others for  aiding and abetting.   

HQI Homagama Police CI Praneeth Mahawadu informed court  that the victim was under treatment at Homagama Base Hospital and that  the investigations were still not complete. He requested court to remand  the suspects till April 11. However, the magistrate ordered to place the six underage  suspects under probation at the children’s home and remanded the other.     

Attorneys-at-Law Sudath Wickremaratne and Kapila Kithsiri appeared for the suspects.
