Govt. expects to generate US$ 8Mn foreign exchange revenue in 2025
Marking a significant step in expanding the fisheries sector, Sri Lanka has officially commenced exporting locally produced canned fish.
According to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the first-ever shipment was headed to the United Arab Emirates over the weekend from the Ocean Food factory premises in Madurankuliya under the supervision of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources Deputy Minister Rathna Gamage.
Speaking at the event, he stated that this initiative marks a significant step in expanding Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector, reducing reliance on imports, and positioning locally produced canned fish as a competitive export commodity.
While local consumption stands at 300,000 cans per day, the industry has the capacity to produce 500,000 cans daily.
The Government expects this initiative to generate US$8 million in foreign exchange revenue in 2025.
