The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentary group who met yesterday has decided to go ahead and select suitable candidates for the next local government elections, its Senior Vice President Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday.
Mr. Kiriella said the group decided to give priority to 75 members of local government bodies who were expelled from the UNP recently and thus lost their posts preparing nominations. “It has been decided to launch a programme to protect the candidates from threats and intimidation,” Mr. Kiriella said.
The term of the local bodies including the Municipal Councils will end in February 2021 while the last local government elections was held on February 10, 2018.
Another decision made by the group is to provide the MPs of the SJB various degree programmes to enhance their skills.
