Kalutara District Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Jagath Withana has been provided with security by the Ministerial Security Division (MSD) on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Police Spokesman F.U. Wootler said that two officers have been assigned for his protection since Saturday (25), while a decision regarding further reinforcement of security will be taken after an assessment of the situation.
Withana has become the first MP to receive such ministerial-level security under the current government, according to the MSD.
The move follows allegations by the MP that he has received death threats, claiming there is an attempt to shoot him.
Delivering a statement in Parliament on Friday (24), MP Withana revealed that the IGP had issued written instructions to the Kalutara Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to investigate the matter. He also tabled the relevant letter in Parliament and urged authorities to take immediate measures to ensure his safety.
