The strike of work by the University Teachers’ Association of Rajarata University reached the seventh day yesterday much to the anxiety of the students.

This has resulted in a standstill of all academic activities of the university and the administration to a certain extent.

President of the association Nalaka Geekiyanage said they had taken up the prevailing crisis in the University with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and that she gave an undertaking to resolve the issue regarding the appointment of a Vice Chancellor.  “ However we have decided to continue the trade union action until the relevant authorities reveal in writing how they propose to resolve the issue. The executive committee of the association has decided to create awareness in this regard among other university trade unions and to seek their cooperation.” He said.

He further said their main demand was to select a vice chancellor from the three nominations illegally rejected and returned without showing cause.

Meanwhile the acting Vice Chancellor has gone abroad on an official assignment.
