“The Batalanda issue is not the only incident that has to be probed. Some 16 SLFP organizers and 6300 supporters were killed during the insurrection of 1989.

The Opposition is expected to present three other commission reports to Parliament including the report of the commission which probed the killing of SLMP Leader Wijaya Kumaratunga in 1988.  Opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake said he will present three commission reports to the House shorty. He said one of these would be the report of the commission which probed the killing of SLMP Leader Wijaya Kumaratunga.  “The Batalanda issue is not the only incident that has to be probed. Some 16 SLFP organizers and 6300 supporters were killed during the insurrection of 1989. Justice should be meted out to these persons. There were 42 ballot boxes in Moneragala District without a single vote during the 1988 presidential election. The results of the 1988 presidential election would have been different if people voted in the areas such as Moneragala. The third candidate Ossie Abeygunasekera polled 280,000 votes. People who voted for him would have definitely marked the second preference to late Sirimavo Bandaranaike. If so the results would have been different. All these matters need to be probed,” he said.
