NPP secures 42 hung local bodies while SJB secures 24

The Ruling National People’s Power (NPP) has secured the  control of 42 hung councils to date, while the main opposition Samagi Jana  Balawegaya (SJB) has secured 24 councils.   

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) National Organiser Tissa  Attanayake told Daily Mirror that his party has managed to secure 24  local bodies alone, while ITAK (Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi) has managed  to secure 16 local bodies. Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has  managed to secure three local bodies, while Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC)  has also managed to secure three. Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and  All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) have secured one each to date.   

SJB was successful in securing the Hambantota Municipal  Council and Buttala Pradeshiya Sabha yesterday, while NPP secured  Kalutara and Matale Districts yesterday.   

Around 160 ended up as hung councils after the local election held on May 6 this year.  

Out of the total number of local bodies for which the  election was held in May this year, 245 councils have been formed. This  includes the 161 councils in which parties won an absolute majority. NPP  secured absolute majorities in 119 councils.
