NPP controlled Kandeketiya Pradeshiya Sabha budget defeated

The budget for 2026 of Kandeketiya Pradeshiya Sabha was defeated by four votes yesterday.   

National People’s Power (NPP) is the ruling party in the Pradeshiya Sabha but the opposition commands a majority. The NPP is represented by six members and the opposition by ten members.   

When Chairman Harsha Ratnayaka (NPP) tabled the budget after the debate, six members of the ruling party voted for and four members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), two members of United People’s Alliance (PA), two members of the UNP and the Sarva Jana Balaya voted against.   

Meanwhile, the NPP, in power of Meegahakiula Pradeshiya Sabha in Badulla District was able to have the budget for 2026 passed by a majority of one vote.   

The nine members of the ruling party voted for and the nine opposition members against. The Chairman T. M. Kumaratissa casted his vote passing the budget by a majority of one vote.   

However, one of the opposition members representing the UNP was absent from the meeting.
