The National People’s Power (NPP) Peliyagoda Urban Council member, whose husband and son were arrested for drug smuggling, resigned yesterday, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said yesterday.

Legal action is being taken against the two individuals who were arrested with drugs in Eppawala, the National People’s Power (NPP) said.

The NPP added that the member in question, Disna Niranjala Kumari, was elected as a member of the Peliyagoda Urban Council at the last Local Government elections.

The JVP said she was shocked after the incident at a time the government has launched a drug eradication campaign and that she resigned to facilitate the legal process and in support of the government’s programme to introduce a new political culture.

She has handed over the letter of resignation to the Gampaha District Returning Officer and submitted a copy to the General Secretary of the NPP.

The husband and the son of the council member were arrested with more than a kilo of heroin at a hotel during a raid in the Eppawala area on Wednesday.
