Interpol assistance sought to bring Policeman who fled to Dubai

Police to seek Interpol assistance to bring a police constable attached to the Mount Lavinia Police Station who fled to Dubai after escaping with a T-56 firearm and 30 rounds of ammunition.  

Police spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said that the officer took the weapon and ammunition when he left for duty on the night of February 8th.  

However, the officer failed to returned to the station and did not respond to calls made to his mobile phone.  
Further investigations revealed that the officer had flown to Dubai on Saturday night via the Katunayake Airport, the spokesman said.  

The suspect constable is a resident of Anuradhapura.  

In response, SSP Manathunga said police are coordinating with Interpol to bring the officer to Sri Lanka.   
The firearm is yet to be recovered, and four police teams are conducting investigations to trace the weapon and ammunition.
