Spill gates at the Wimalasurendra and Kotmale hydropower reservoirs were opened last morning when the two reservoirs reached spill level due to heavy rain being experienced in the catchment areas.
Asst. Director, Nuwara Eliya district Disaster Management Cetre said the water level in Kelaniganga river had swelled due to the release of spill water from Wimalasurendra hydropower reservoir.
Engineers in Charge of the Kotmale reservoirs said the spill gates in the reservoir would automatically open if the rain persisted and cautioned people living in the low lying areas of the dam.
Torrential rain experienced in the central hills had resulted in falling trees and mounds of earth obstructing traffic and causing the breakdown of the power supply
Meanwhile the main waterfalls in the hill country including St.Clare and Devon had swelled creating a lovely and attractive sight.
