A garden lizard reportedly exposed to cyanide by a suspect has triggered an investigation at the Angunakolapelessa Prison, authorities said.
Prison officials discovered a small packet of cyanide hidden in a cell during a routine inspection on August 18, Prison Commissioner Jagath Weerasinghe confirmed. Investigators found the body of a deceased garden lizard nearby, which the suspect had reportedly used to test the cyanide, raising concerns about the potential misuse of the chemical within the prison.
During questioning, the suspect admitted receiving instructions from an external individual, identified in reports as “Kudu Salindu,” to carry out a contract killing targeting two former commando inmates inside the prison, in exchange for Rs. 1 million. Another inmate reportedly helped bring the cyanide into the facility.
The suspect allegedly identified the intended targets to authorities and said the plot was part of a premeditated contract killing plan.
Prison authorities confirmed measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the two former commandos while an internal investigation continues. The lizard’s body has been handed over to police for further examination.
