A total cadre of 250, 000 government servants ranging from office assistants, clerks and even up to Additional Secretaries of ministries will be deployed to perform various duties pertaining to tomorrow’s Local Government elections to be held countrywide for 339 local bodies, an official said.
Chairman Election Commission of Sri Lanka (ECSL) R. M. A. L. Ratnayake told the Daily Mirror last evening a majority of over 150, 000 female state officials will participate in election duties with their male colleagues.
These officials representing various grades of the public service will be deployed in 4, 877 wards scattered across the country.
The elections chief also said seven local election monitoring bodies have volunteered to assist the commission in observing free and fair Local Government polls tomorrow.
The oldest and the recognized two monitoring bodies People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) and Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) will gain access into polling booths, whilst the rest can act as mobile observers, Chairman Ratnayake said.
The commission expects to announce most of the results by Tuesday night and complete declaring full results within Wednesday (7).
