A 58-year-old elderly man from the Nikaweratiya area employed as a cinnamon peeler in Hakmana, who met a 22-year-old young woman at Galle and had a casual talk and soon fell in love with her. The onlookers might have presumed that they were father and daughter.
However, he forgot his age and felt the urge to spend the day enjoying with her and fell prey to her glib talk. He thought his dream was turning into a reality when the young woman lured him to go to Kaluwella beach without an iota of feeling that he had fallen prey to a trap.
Just as he held her by hand and prepared to go behind a bush, a hefty young man rushed to the scene and assaulted him, accusing him of attempting to molest his wife. The woman dealt another blow and relieved him of his mobile phone, and cash Rs.17,000 and both of them fled from the scene.
Having nowhere to turn, he went to the police and made a complaint. A police team of the Crime Investigation Branch took no time to leave for Kaluwella and arrested the young woman and her companion.
The young woman and the 33-year-old young man were from Pilana in Galle. Investigations revealed that they are drug addicts who had resorted to robbery to earn money for drugs.
SI Kirthi, Sergeants 58987 Hasantha, 7964 Chandraratne, and Sergeant 5906 Samanmalee carried out the raid and arrested the two suspects.
