The Communist Party of Sri Lanka which expressed its deep concern over the tragic developments in Nepal said that though the immediate trigger for the protests – culminating in attacks on Parliament and the Court –was a “ban” on twenty-six social media platforms, it is important to clarify that the legislation in question requires foreign social media companies to register locally, abide by national laws in Nepal.

In a statement, the party said, “We regret the excessive use of violence against protesters, which has resulted in the loss of several lives and escalated the crisis. We condemn the mob attacks on political leaders, including members of our fraternal communist parties. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Comrade Jhalanath Khanal, former Prime Minister, on the untimely death of his wife, Rajyalaxmi Chitraka, in this wave of violence.

The immediate trigger for the protests – culminating in attacks on Parliament and the Court – was a “ban” on twenty-six social media platforms. However, it is important to clarify that the legislation in question requires foreign social media companies to register locally, abide by national laws in Nepal. Platforms such as TikTok, which complied with local requirements, have not been affected. This distinction is critical to understanding the real context of the unrest.

Beyond the immediate spark, these protests also reflect deep-seated contradictions and socioeconomic grievances in Nepal. Chronic unemployment, corruption, and political instability have created a climate of frustration, especially among the youth. Lack of unity among left and democratic forces, and lack of progress in economic development have exacerbated the situation.

At the same time, we note with concern the movement of imperialist, monarchist, and religious fundamentalist groups agitating to take advantage of the situation to suit their own agendas.

The CPSL hopes that the constitutional order of Nepal – an achievement of the long struggles of left and democratic forces – will be restored and safeguarded. We stand in solidarity with our comrades and fraternal parties in Nepal, and hope for a united response to address the root causes of the unrest, defend democracy, restore peace, and advance the cause of social justice, according to the party.
