The carcass of a ring-tailed civet, a mammal belonging to a rare species of animal endangered with extinction, was recovered from Siripura area in Bogawanthalawa last morning by wildlife officers.
Wildlife officers said it had been knocked down to death by a vehicle while crossing the road. Residents of the area said the carcass was lying on the road and that they placed it by the roadside. They said the animals are roaming about at night in search of food and water, and are often killed by vehicles speeding along the road.
