Baby elephant mowed down by lorry

A baby elephant had been mowed down by a lorry transporting cement at Hiriwadunna on the Habarana – Dambulla road in the early hours of last morning.Wildlife officials said the calf was about ten years old.   

Investigations revealed that the calf had crossed the road to drink from the Hiriwattunna tank had been knocked down by the lorry transporting a consignment of cement from Trincomalee.   

Wildlife officials who rushed the scene provided treatment to the injured calf but to now avail. They said the calf had received fatal injuries. The driver of the lorry was arrested by the Habarana police pending investigations.
