An attempt to sell a stock of ambergris for Rs.15 million was foiled and two suspects taken into custody by wildlife officers with the help of the police.during a raid in Giriulla area yesterday.
The two suspects were from Bopitiya in Giriulla and Thalgaskanda in Puttalam. The wildlife officers had carried out the raid on information received from Air Force Intelligence officers.
The suspects had told the decoys that they had in their possession 12 kilos of amber to be sold for Rs.900,000 each but they had brought only two kilos when the decoys met them during the transaction.
The suspects were being further interrogated to recover the rest of the stock.
A team of wildlife officers from Karuwalagaswewa and Nikaweratiya wildlife offices had carried out the raid with the help of the Giriulla police.
