The academic staff of the Jaffna University has resorted to trade union action on five demands including stern disciplinary action against the misdemeanour of the students. The lecturers of all faculties have joined the strike led by the University Teachers’ Association.

They pointed out that the university administration has failed to take disciplinary action against the unruly activities of the students.

Recently, nine students of the Jaffna University had been suspended for consuming liquor and drugs and behaving in an indisciplined manner. However, a group of students had staged a protest in front of the university campus against the action taken by the university administration.

The University Teachers’ Association pointed out that the decisions of the university administration had gone in favour of the students much to the injustice against the academic staff.
It has decided to continue the strike until their demands were met.
