A unique highlight of the event is the inclusion of over a hundred intricately crafted traditional animal figures
The 79th Mihindu Maha Perahera of the historic Heenatiyana Purana Pothgul Viharaya, a temple over 150 years old located within the Katana Divisional Secretariat, is set to traverse the streets in a grand expression of religious and cultural heritage. Recognised as one of the oldest religious events in Sri Lanka, the procession traces its origins back a century when it was first initiated as a humble flower procession by Ven. Heenatiyana Dhammakkhanda Nayaka Thera.
Organised under the guidance of Ven. Shasthrapathi Heenatiyana Dhammadassi Thera, the event is primarily driven by the collective efforts of the temple’s Dayaka Sabha and the local villagers. Marking a highly venerated moment in the religious observances, P. Jayachandara and Nalani Madushani participated in the auspicious ceremony of placing the Sacred Relics casket.
This year’s magnificent procession will feature twelve elephants and showcase eighty-nine distinct cultural elements that blend both up-country and low-country traditions. A unique highlight of the event is the inclusion of over a hundred intricately crafted traditional animal figures.
The procession is also notable for its impressive scale, covering an extensive travel distance of approximately 13 kilometres. The sheer magnitude of the event is reflected in the processional line itself, which stretches across a length of two kilometres, promising an uninterrupted and vibrant celebration of traditional Buddhist culture.
