The Special Task Force (STF) has seized some 100 pigeons allegedly smuggled into Sri Lanka by sea and hidden along the Nadukuda beach.
STF officials said the discovery was made during a search operation conducted on August 13 by the Northern Province Special Raids Unit, acting on received intelligence.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the pigeons had been brought into the country by an unidentified group with the intention of selling them illegally. Authorities believe the suspects had concealed the birds along the beach until they could be transported to buyers.
The STF is continuing investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the smuggling operation.
