On World Wish Day, Sri Lanka proudly welcomed the launch of the Make-A-Wish Sri Lanka, a programme powered by the Indira Cancer Trust.
The World Wish Day is celebrated annually on April 29. This day commemorates the anniversary of the first wish that inspired the Make-A-Wish foundation. Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.
The launch of Make-A-Wish Sri Lanka is not just a new chapter for the Indira Cancer Trust but a turning point for children and families in Sri Lanka who face the immense challenges of critical illnesses.
Through the power of a wish, we are giving children a chance to smile, to dream, and to feel like children again, despite their struggles. This isn’t just about a moment of happiness—it’s about helping them find strength and courage in the face of adversity.
Every child deserves a chance to dream. And for children battling critical illnesses, those dreams can be a source of incredible strength. Studies show that having a wish granted has a profound effect on a child’s emotional, social, and physical well-being.
In fact, 97% of wish children and 95% of parents agree that a wish experience transforms the way they approach their treatment, bringing hope and renewed spirit.
With the launch of Make-A-Wish Sri Lanka, we are bringing this powerful programme to Sri Lanka for the first time. As part of the global Make-A-Wish International network, we join nearly 50 countries in granting over 615,000 wishes to children worldwide. We now have the opportunity to ensure Sri Lankan children facing life-threatening illnesses experience the same life-changing moments.
The wishes granted so far have been nothing short of miraculous for the children and families involved.
Take the story of 8-year-old Rasindu Sandaruwan, whose wish to meet his favorite singer, Amisha Minol, became a reality. Rasindu’s dream brought him an experience that filled him with joy and hope in a time when he needed it most.
Similarly, Krishnika, a 12-year-old girl suffering from cancer, wished for a tablet to stay connected with her studies and friends.
During her stay at Suwa Arana, she met Mr Karu Jayasuriya, the Patron of Indira Cancer Trust, at the April New Year celebration event.
Former MP Karu Jayasuriya, who founded the Indira Cancer Trust after the loss of his daughter Indira, touched Krishnika deeply with his words, actions, and the compassion he showed.
Inspired by this encounter, Krishnika’s wish was to receive the tablet directly from him, a moment that she will always hold close to her heart.
Then there’s Nethuli, a seven-year-old girl, whose simple wish for a yellow teddy bear brought the brightest smile to her face. For her, that bear wasn’t just a toy—it was a symbol of hope during a tough journey.
Thanks to the support of Lions International and District 306B we have created a Make-A-Wish Multi-Purpose Room at Indira Cancer Trust.
This special space serves as a place where children can enjoy activities, receive support, and watch their wishes take shape. It’s a place where dreams come alive and where memories are made.
The launch of Make-A-Wish Sri Lanka is just the beginning. While these children face incredible challenges, their resilience is inspiring.
Unlike in the West, where children may wish for trips to places like Disneyland, our children’s wishes are simple, yet each one is deeply meaningful. For them, a wish is not an escape; it’s a source of light in their journey. At Indira Cancer Trust, we provide essential medical care and over 20 support programmes. Make-A-Wish, however, is the extra step—the icing on the cake. It’s about showing these children they are seen, loved, and worthy of joy, even during the toughest times. Every wish is made special through the dedication of our team, who leave no detail overlooked in their effort to create something truly memorable.
These wishes ignite hope and remind children that dreams can still be a part of their lives. We invite you to be part of this journey. Visit us at Indira Cancer Trust or connect with us on social media to witness the difference your support can make.
“A wish brings more than a moment of happiness; it gives strength to keep going.”
