The Sanitary conditions in the Sri Lankan Tent |
What was supposed to be a lifetime spiritual pinnacle—four days of sacred devotion in the tents of Mina—has collapsed into a living nightmare of systemic neglect for 3,500 Sri Lankan pilgrims. Left to struggle in conditions that strip them of basic human dignity, their plight has exposed a severe moral breakdown in leadership.
At the centre of this tragedy stands the Sri Lanka Hajj Committee, which unilaterally selected Rehlat Wa Manafe Company for Tourism without consulting experienced local travel agents. The consequences of this backroom decision are catastrophic, exposing a shocking divide between promise and reality:
• The “A-Category” Lie vs. “C-Category” Reality: Every pilgrim paid a premium rate of LKR 562,000 specifically under the strict promise of top-tier Category A services. Instead, they were dumped into bottom-tier Category C tents—facilities worth less than half of what they paid.
• 32 Toilets for 3,500 People: A mere 32 toilets have been provided for the entire group. Because these same units double as bathing facilities, the ratio stands at an impossible 1 toilet per 100 pilgrims. If each person takes just 5 minutes, a pilgrim can access the bathroom a maximum of twice a day. Elderly and sick pilgrims are left weeping in sweltering lines for hours.
• 2 Buffet Lines for 3,500 People: For all 3,500 exhausted travelers, the provider arranged just two buffet points—one for men and one for women. After hours of intense rituals under brutal desert heat, pilgrims face massive, chaotic queues only to find food of such poor quality that it is entirely inedible.
Yet, what has ignited absolute outrage is the stark hypocrisy of those in charge. While ordinary citizens faint from heat and hunger, Hajj Committee members have reportedly refused to even visit the public tents. Instead, they are hiding away in private VIP accommodations, completely insulated from the misery and enjoying exclusive access to luxury washrooms.
This is no longer just an administrative failure; it carries the heavy stench of financial fraud and the cruel abuse of pilgrim rights. The money meant to preserve the safety of our people has vanished, replaced by public humiliation in the Holy Land.
The Sri Lanka Hajj Committee unilaterally forced this provider onto the community, and they alone own this disaster.
All five members of the Hajj Committee must accept full executive responsibility and resign immediately. To remain in office while our elders suffer in the desert is an admission of guilt. If they do not step down today, it stands as absolute proof of active fraud in the sacred matters of Hajj.
