ATG TAKES THE LEAD IN COASTAL CONSERVATION AND MARINE ECOSYSTEM PROTECTION!

ATG Group of Companies, a pioneer in the global glove manufacturing sector, has made environmental conservation a core objective for over thirty years, prioritising sustainable practices across its operations and beyond. As part of these ongoing efforts, ATG Hand Care PVT LTD in Koggala organised a large-scale beach cleanup programme in line with World Cleanup Day 2025, marking another milestone in the Group’s environmental stewardship journey.

The initiative took place on the nineteenth (19) of September with the cleanup of the Weligama beach ecosystem, a prominent coastal destination that contributes significantly to Sri Lanka’s tourism and cultural identity. In total, more than 1,620 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste were collected from a 1.5 km stretch. The collected waste was carefully sorted into categories, including plastics (PET, LDP, and Styrofoam), glass, and metal, to ensure responsible disposal and recycling.

Additionally, the programme aimed to raise public awareness of the dangers posed by non-biodegradable waste, such as polythene and plastics, while also educating communities and schools about waste management, sustainable practices, and environmental sustainability.

The initiative was executed in collaboration with the Department of Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resources Management, Marine Environment Authority, Central Environment Authority, Weligama Municipal Council, Weligama Police, Koggala Air Force Base, local schools, ESOFT Metro Campus, and dedicated environmental enthusiasts. To enhance participant safety and operational efficiency, ATG provided customised ATG gloves, improving the overall effectiveness of the cleanup efforts, as well.

This coastal conservation programme follows a series of pioneering Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives led by ATG in 2025. In line with World Environment Day, ATG organised a mangrove restoration project by funding the planting and maintenance of 1,000 mangrove saplings along a one-kilometre stretch of Koggala lagoon and its surrounding islands, with financial support exceeding LKR 800,000.

Additionally, ATG sponsored the ‘Zooxanthellae’ project along the Mirissa coastline with LKR 1.5 million, focusing on restoring Sri Lanka’s declining coral ecosystems.

The Group also spearheads one of Sri Lanka’s largest mangrove restoration programmes in Muthu Nagar Village, Trincomalee, in collaboration with the Forest Conservation Department and the ‘Thuru Saviya’ community-based organisation. The first phase of this initiative was carried out in 2023, resulting in the planting of 10,000 mangroves with an investment of LKR 3 million. The second phase is currently underway, involving the planting of another batch of 10,000 mangroves with a project value of LKR 3.4 million, bringing the total coverage to 4 hectares. This project directly expands the blue carbon ecosystem for carbon capture and rehabilitates degraded biodiversity. Such initiatives support ATG’s carbon reduction efforts, as mangroves have the highest potential to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂), averaging 6–8 tonnes of CO₂ per hectare per year globally.

Furthermore, ATG contributed to the ‘Thuruliya Wenuwen Api’ national reforestation project, launched by the Sri Lanka Army, by investing LKR 3.1 million to plant 1,500 endemic plants in Morawewa, Trincomalee, across an area of 2 hectares, with the Forest Conservation Department monitoring survival rates of the plants.

Mr. Jamaal Abdeen - Project Manager of ATG Group of Companies, stated, “ATG is committed to addressing the environmental challenges facing Sri Lanka and ensuring a secure future for its next generation. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) for 2030, we will continue to integrate sustainability into our daily operations, policies, and community partnerships.”
