Popularly known as ‘Little Rome’, Negombo, with its Portuguese and Dutch roots, was an important trading post since ancient times and a thriving tourism hub since the early 1960s. It once held a top spot for its golden beach stretch and the surrounding lagoon. As the closest coastal tourism hub to the capital city, Negombo was the most popular destination on Sri Lanka’s west coast.
However, in recent years, the glamour, appeal, and demand for this beach destination have diminished due to various factors. Today, Negombo has largely become an ‘airport stopover’ for travellers visiting Sri Lanka. Beach destinations in the south-west, such as Unawatuna, Mirissa, Goyambokka, Rekawa and Tangalle, have outshone Negombo in terms of popularity and visitor interest.
However, the residents of Negombo are not ready to let go of their fading heritage. Determined to revive their city’s vibrant legacy, local pioneers have led a major reawakening project this July.
Spearheaded by the Old Boys’ Association (OBA) of Maris Stella College, Negombo, together with the Negombo Municipal Council, the Divisional Secretariat of Negombo and officially endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, the initiative will take shape as ‘MMR 25 – TOGETHER’: A Festival of Speed, Spirit and Revival, set to take place from July 25 to 27.
Curated by the Old Boys’ Association (OBA) of Maris Stella College, ‘MMR 25 – TOGETHER’, a dynamic multi-day beach and city festival, promises to ignite the West Coast with a unique fusion of motorsports, music, cultural celebration and sustainability-focused experiences. Set against the backdrop of the city’s vibrant cultural legacy and musical heritage, the festival officially launched last week with a dynamic line-up of pre-event and post-event community activities aimed at creating long-term social, environmental, and economic impact.

This one-of-a-kind event is expected to attract over 6,000 local and international visitors to Negombo. It began with two days of site cleanups (July 4–5) at key historic locations, including the Negombo Jetty and the Old District Courts, and will conclude with a post-event beach cleanup on July 27—ensuring a zero environmental footprint.
The main public beach cleanup and a citywide plastic awareness campaign, scheduled from July 12 to 19, underscore the festival’s strong commitment to sustainability and civic responsibility.
Celebrating 25 years of Maris Stella’s motorsports legacy, the festival will feature thrilling beach drag races, sunset concerts, cultural showcases, and community-driven sustainability initiatives—positioning Negombo as a vibrant destination for tourism, lifestyle and economic revival.
Adding excitement to the festivities, the MMR TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) Rally Championship will take place on July 26, bringing together 100 top rally competitors. Spanning a 60 km route through Negombo and its scenic suburbs, this unique motorsport event blends precision, adventure, and cultural immersion, celebrating the spirit of Negombo with every twist and turn.
‘‘MMR 25 – TOGETHER’ is more than just a celebration. It’s a commitment to the future of Negombo tourism—a bold step towards economic revival, youth empowerment, and reimagining what our city can offer the world’ said Sudath Fernando of the Maris Stella OBA.
With Sri Lanka’s tourism sector on the path to recovery, MMR 25 emerges as a powerful catalyst. By blending motorsports and cultural programming with strong local business participation, the festival is poised to generate tangible economic benefits for hotels, restaurants, vendors, and transport providers across Negombo and beyond.
Designed with sustainability and youth engagement at its core, the event features environmental awareness campaigns, cleanup drives, and youth-led innovation stalls—ensuring the festival leaves behind more than just memories. It will leave a lasting legacy of responsibility, renewal, and community pride.
Complementing the speed and thrill of July 26, ‘MMR 25 – TOGETHER’ will bring Negombo’s Paradise Beach stretch to life with nonstop sunset beach concerts, live DJ sessions and performances by local music acts, offering a sonic journey through Sri Lanka’s vibrant soundscape, from classic baila beats to contemporary fusion.
‘The Beach Festival on the 26th also places a strong spotlight on Negombo’s cultural identity. From traditional dance performances and craft fairs to culinary showcases celebrating the region’s famed seafood cuisine, ‘TOGETHER’ invites visitors to experience the city’s heritage through all five senses’ said Dhammika Fernando, President of the Maris Stella College OBA. ‘This is a new chapter for Negombo—where local culture meets global standards of engagement’.
Special exhibitions and workshops will feature local artisans, youth entrepreneurs, and sustainability advocates—bringing community voices to the forefront in a shared space of creativity, innovation, and dialogue.
Anchored in Sustainability and Community
Under the ‘Oceans Together’ initiative, MMR 25 is also a landmark CSR platform focused on coastal conservation and environmental awareness. In partnership with the Negombo Municipal Council, Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), and local civil society groups, the festival will mobilize sponsors, schools, and volunteers to carry out beach cleanups, PET bottle collection drives, and city beautification activities throughout the month of July.
Key public events include a community-wide beach clean-up on July 12 and a final post-festival clean-up on July 27 at Goldi Sands—underscoring the festival’s commitment to sustainable tourism.
