Samagi Jana Balwegaya (SJB) will support an Amendment to the Provincial Council election Ordinance in order to hold the provincial council elections under the PR system, Party General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said yesterday.

Mr Madduma Bandara told a press conference that his party is for holding the provincial council elections under the Proportional Representation system. “ We were asked about our opinion on holding the provincial council election at the recent meeting of the Committee on  Electoral Reforms and I as the representative of SJB informed that my party is for holding the provincial council elections under proportional representation system and said our party will support such an amendment in Parliament,” he said.

Responding to the recent remarks made by MP Diana Gamage the SJB General Secretary said the former has no say in the SJB. “ She can come out and say whatever she wants to say but she clearly doesn’t have any say in the party. She only possesses a copy of the old deed of the party,” Mr. Madduma Bandara said.

He reiterated that Gamage had been expelled from the party as she went against the party and voted in favour of the 20th Amendment.
