Heavy rains pose fresh flood threats in islandwide locations

  • Districts of Kurunegala, Gampaha and Puttalam Districts are facing flood threats
  • Land slide warnings issued for Kandy, Kurunegala and Kegalle Districts

Several areas in the country are facing fresh flood threats due to heavy rains that have come down in torrents during the past few days, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.   


DMC Spokesman Pradeep Kodippili said Districts of Kurunegala, Gampaha and Puttalam Districts are facing flood threats. Some low lying areas such as Giriulla, and Mawathagama have already gone under water. In addition Bingiriya, Kobeigane, Pallama, Arachchikattuwa and Chilaw are facing a flood threat.   


In addition land slide warnings were issued for Kandy, Kurunegala and Kegalle Districts.    

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology said the atmospheric conditions are favourable for the formation of afternoon thundershowers over most parts of the island. Showers or thundershowers were forecast over most parts of the island after 1.00pm.   


Heavy showers above 100mm were expected to occur at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northwestern and Uva provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Mannar districts. Showers were also expected  in the Northern and Eastern provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts during the morning
