The Archaeological Department has carried out excavations in Nelugala archaeological site in Piyangala in Ampara district and is expected to forward a report of findings to Minister Vidura Wickramanayaka on Augut 16.

The Nelugala archaeological site had been left to the mercy of the jungle for a long time until it was identified by archaeologists recently.

Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath said the excavations had been carried out under a joint project of the Department of Archaeology and the Central Cultural Fund.

She said judging from the finds, Nelugala archaeological site dated back to the early Anuradhapura period. The inscriptions among the finds were copied and forwarded to the archaeologist for further study and the excavation project was nearing completion.
