While reiterating the fact raised by medical experts that the Delta variant would be dominant in Sri Lanka, the Health Ministry said patients with Delta variant could be seen in every district in the country. Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said yesterday that in a situation where Delta variant cases have been detected in Western, North, South and Eastern provinces, such cases could be found in every district in the country.

He said, although the Health authorities had so far detected 68 cases of Delta variant, there could be more undetected cases in the community.

“It’s apparent and visible that Delta variant is becoming the most dominant variant in the world and in our country is not an exception for that,” he underscored.

However, Dr. Herath stressed “we don’t have to follow extraordinary steps to contain the Delta variant, but simply adhere to strict common health practices such as wearing a mask properly, washing hands regularly and maintaining social distancing.”

He proceeded to say that vaccination drive in the country is underway in full swing and urged people to get vaccinated without hesitation as it provides shield against COVID-19.
